The Global Advocate Fellowship is a rigorous and immersive 9-month professional training program designed for results-oriented individuals with a passion for global impact. Fellows are carefully matched with CBOs and NGOs in one of eight countries, where they’ll support community-directed development initiatives.
The first 4 months of the program include curriculum sessions on project development, human-centered design, fundraising, marketing, storytelling, Connected Development, and more.
Our training kicks off with a 5 day training, where Advocates will take part in sessions led by Mama Hope staff, past Advocates, highly acclaimed consultants, nonprofit directors and business professionals.
Right away, Advocates are paired with a project in Africa, Latin America or Asia, focused on one of Mama Hope’s program areas: clean water, agriculture and food security, health care, education and youth development. During the first three months of the program, an Advocate’s primary focus is running a fundraising campaign to raise a minimum of $20,000 towards their project. They will also communicate with their partner communities’ leadership to formulate a detailed work plan.
Advocates spend the second 3–4 months of the program living in and exploring their partner communities around the world.
During an Advocate’s stay at their project site, they get to work alongside community leaders to oversee project implementation, document the progress of their program objectives and broadcast their life-changing experiences to friends, family and Mama Hope supporters with blogs, updates, photos, and videos.
Returning Advocates are paired with new Advocates who have just joined the program. By sharing successful techniques and providing up to date knowledge of the project’s progress, returning Advocates are able to facilitate a smooth transition and provide the constant contact their mentee needs to get to know their project, the partner community and prepare for their work on the ground!
Advocates prepare and submit a final project report and a capstone of their choosing. Previous capstones have varied greatly depending on the Advocate’s strengths and future career goals. They have ranged from planning large fundraising events to preparing major grants and arranging speaking engagements.
Finally, the Mama Hope staff helps prepare the Advocate to take the next steps in their professional development, whether that’s job searching, applying for graduate school or starting their own organization or company.
